Shihan Shiroma formal photo Jiro Shiroma was born in Okinowa (Ryukyu Island), Japan. He began his study of Shuri-te (Okinowan old style of fighting arts) at the age of 13 under Master Kanji Inaiuku. At the age of 15, he began the study of Kendo (Japanese Samaurai Sword) under Tokusei Yamashiro, 8th degree black belt.  He received his first degree black belt in Kendo at age 18.

When Shihan Shiroma was 20 years old Master Inaiuku passed away. Shihan Shiroma then started training under Shugoro Nakazato, a 10th degree black belt, the leader and President of Okinowan Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Association.  Shorin-Ryu is a karate style which includes weapons and Tori-Te (similar to Jujutsu, Aikido and Jodo mixed together).

In 1968 Shihan Shiroma received his 6th degree black belt and instructor's certificate.  Between 1970-1972 he trained in Muai Thai (Thai Kick Boxing) at the Naha Kick Boxing Gym.  In 1973 he opened a Karate School in Ginowan City, Okinowa and began teaching Karate.  At this time he also instructed The U.S. Marine Third Division Air Facility in hand to hand combat.

In April 1977, he moved to the United States and opened the Arizona Martial Arts Academy in Phoenix. He has taught martial arts in the Valley since.
