Jiro Shiroma was
born in Okinowa (Ryukyu Island), Japan. He began his study of Shuri-te
(Okinowan old style of fighting arts) at the age of 13 under Master
Kanji Inaiuku. At the age of 15, he began the study of Kendo (Japanese
Samaurai Sword) under Tokusei Yamashiro, 8th degree black
belt. He received his first degree black belt in Kendo at age
18.
When Shihan Shiroma was 20 years old
Master Inaiuku passed away. Shihan Shiroma then started training under
Shugoro Nakazato, a 10th degree black belt, the leader and President of
Okinowan Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Association. Shorin-Ryu is a
karate style which includes weapons and Tori-Te (similar to Jujutsu,
Aikido and Jodo mixed together).
In 1968 Shihan Shiroma received his 6th
degree black belt and instructor's certificate. Between
1970-1972 he trained in Muai Thai (Thai Kick Boxing) at the Naha Kick
Boxing Gym. In 1973 he opened a Karate School in Ginowan
City, Okinowa and began teaching Karate. At this time he also
instructed The U.S. Marine Third Division Air Facility in hand to hand
combat.
